According to an Associated Press story the local Human Society experiences significant spike in the number of animals it takes in after spring graduation.
From the AP:
The society says 30 percent of the animals it takes in all year arrive after the Washington State University graduation.
The Humane Society president, Greg Wust, says the staff tries to find homes for unwanted pets, but the departing owners leave a burden for staff and city of Pullman.
