You may have seen Cao Weiguo at the bars and thought who is this guy? We always did and now we know, he teaches Chinese at WSU, has a few degrees, and is working on his PhD. Why does he go to the bars all the time (other then for the beer)? Because he says it reminds him of his hometown of Shanghai.
The blog My Bleezy has profile of Wieguo that sheds some light on who is this kindly looking guy many of us have wondered about.
Here is the beginning of the profile:
An Asian man in his mid 40’s stands alone in the corner. He wears an electric yellow windbreaker and a gold chain hangs around his neck. Sipping his beer, he watches the young people dance around him. Even though his hometown is across the Pacific Ocean, Cao Weiguo feels closest to home at the Pullman bars.“Pullman bars are the only place to compare with Shanghai,” he says.
When Cao began visiting bars in the early 1980’s, he viewed Shanghai, China, as a small town. The locals called it the “city without night.” He describes Shanghai as all night parties, where young people would dance and drink until the early morning hours. The bars in Shanghai, Cao says, used to be very safe. Very rarely did fights occur. He says fights occurred more often in rural bars and usually involved knives.
