We have the WSU Office of Student Conduct’s findings letter against fraternity Alpha Kappa Lambda (AKL). The letter finds that the frat engaged in bribery, allowed drug dealing, provided minors with alcohol (big surprise there), etc. Here are a few excerpts from the findings letter:
In August 2007, Alpha Kappa Lambda held an unregistered function. You told us it was not a function because there was no evidence that there was a “gathering of 25 or more people.” However, one of your members admitted that 72 t-shirts (with “Work Week Date Dash” printed on them) had been purchased prior to the event.
Moreover, photographs of chapter social events showed the presence of Christopher Smith (a known drug dealer) on at least two occasions. In one of those photos, Smith is wearing the “Work Week Date Dash” t-shirts.
When [censored] was arrested, his wallet contained a “crib” card-indicating that five of your members owed him money for drug purchases they had made.
AKL has said that the university has made baseless claims against the fraternity as a whole. They say just because a few members have engaged in bad conduct doesn’t mean that the whole frat should be punished. Reading the report we think it is very likely that the events involving alcohol occurred and that all members knew about them and most if not all participated in them. As for other parts of the report, this stuck out for us:
Ms Ranger (your cook) told us that the freshman and the sophomores are much better than the juniors and seniors. Yet one of the younger men who testified had recently been arrested for possession of marijuana.
Now we are not saying a possession charge is nothing to be concerned about but just because one of the AKL freshman or sophomores gets busted for weed then all the his other peers are somehow bad? This is what the conduct board seems to be implying and gives at least some credence to the charge by AKL alumni that WSU is jumping the gun and going overboard in their prosecution of the frat.
You can read the Office of Student Conduct’s full findings letter against Alpha Kappa Lambda by going to the Cougster Files (look to the menu on the left) and accessing the WSU conduct/Police reports folder.
