After
living in the dorms for almost four years, I’ve seen many different
programs put on by the residence hall staffs. I’ve also attended most
of them, even though a lot of the time, I wish that I hadn’t even
bothered.
I’ve
seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to residence hall
programs, and since this week alone I’ve seen advertising for both
good and ugly, I thought that I would use this column to discuss this
little problem in the dorms. I have seen homeless make better signs
Since
it’s more fun, I’m going to start with the ugly. Up until this afternoon,
I thought that dorm programs only fell into two categories: good and
bad. This afternoon, however, the “intelligent” people who run my
dorm had to prove me wrong by posting signs for the worst dorm program
that I have ever heard of. The sign read: “Come smoke a cigar! Mon
7:00 PM Meet in the lobby” Looking past the poor grammar and awful
handwriting, which is really hard for me since I am an admitted grammar
snob (and no, I’m not seeking treatment) this program alone is the
dumbest idea that I’ve ever heard of. “Come smoke a cigar!”? What
brain-dead moron thought that that would be a good program for a university
dorm? Why didn’t they just write the signs so that they would be totally
factual: “Come join us in a disgusting habit that kills people and,
if you do it often enough, it’ll kill you too!” I was extremely
tempted to go onto every floor in my dorm and rip these idiotic signs
down before going down to the lobby at seven and asking whoever is running
this program what on Earth they were thinking and whether or not they
had been dropped on their head as a child. Out of respect for them,
I decided to just bite my lip and hold my tongue. But I just couldn’t
stop myself from writing about it. |

As we predicted Scheller/Fry-pierce won the ASWSU presidency/vice presidency. So how did our prediction of the percentage that each ticket would get turn out? Our prediction was somewhat close but not as spot on like we were last year. Here are the numbers:
| | Scheller/Fry-Pierce | Davis/Lambert | # of people in FB Group (as of 12.01 am 3-04-08)
| 529 | 270+22 = 292
| | %of vote predicted based on total # of people in all groups (821) | 64% | 36%
| | Actual # of votes recieved (2014 total) and percentage of actual vote | 1456 = 72%
| 558 = 28%
|
Needless to say this year’s race wasn’t even close. It also had a very low turnout. Over 1100 less people voted this year than last year. The transit measure which was $15 fee for full time students and $7 for part-time students passed by 56%-44% the total votes being just a little more than the Pres/Vp race with 2047 votes cast, 1,140-907.
UPDATE: The grad students didn't pass the transit fee so it will not be implimented. They voted 205-251 against it. |

Last year before the ASWSU election Cougster predicted the winners and percentage of the vote for the presidential race. Our predictions turned out to be nearly spot on. So we are doing it again. Based purely on the facebook we predict Scheller/Fry-Pierce the winners.
Here is how we get that and the percentage of the vote:
| Presidential Tickets | Scheller/Fry-Pierce | Davis/Lambert | # of people in FB Group (as of 12.01 am 3-04-08)
| 529
| 270 + 22 = 292
| %of vote predicted based on total # of people in all groups (821)
| 64%
| 36% |
Last time we also looked at how many friends each candidate had but we can’t see how many friends Leslie Lambert has (if you know tell us) so will skip that for now. Grace Davis has 538 friends listed at WSU. Brandon Scheller has 521 and Adam Fry-pierce has 546. It is interesting how Davis has almost twice as many friends listed at WSU than members of the vote Davis/Lambert groups. The Fresh Four have 282 friends in their group but of course they were disqualified. We at Cougster have had our own experience with the election board and the judicial board. Let’s just say we were not fans of them in the past. We hope the Fresh Four will try again next year but if they want to win, they will need to settle on 2 people and get on the ballot. Overall we think this is a mediocre year and are not impressed with any of the tickets.
Now voting is super simple and easy to do so you should still vote despite our predictions, epecially if you are for Davis/Lambert. Heck scoring an upset and proving us wrong would make a great story…. |

After getting banned for 5 years and being accused of being a drug house, WSU Alpha Kappa Lambda have condemned the actions of the University and have vowed to vigorously fight the Washington State University Student Conduct Board's ruling. In a feisty press release they say the University may have violated Washington Administrative Codes. We think that they might as well fight, what is there to lose?
Here is the full press release:
Statement of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity at Washington State University
Washington State University has initiated a conduct hearing process against the fraternity chapter in connection with allegations made against individual members of the fraternity, including former members who have been expelled by the fraternity. At this time, the fraternity is appealing the findings of the WSU Conduct Board pursuant to the rules of the conduct board process and we will not comment on allegations that are currently subject to appeal.
We are disappointed the University has chosen to jump the gun and take their claims to the media before allowing the fraternity the chance to exercise its right of appeal, pursuant to Washington State Administrative Code.
We are confident the appeal will demonstrate that the University has conducted the process in violation of WAC code and the allegations and outcome they are now pitching in the media is by no means final. Pursuant to WAC, these findings are not official until the right of appeal is passed and the University has no business making irresponsible and defamatory statements to the media prior to a finding being official. Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity had been a member of the campus community for over 80 years and will continue that tradition. We are prepared to exercise all administrative options for appeal and will continue the process in the civil court system if the University continues to pursue what we contend are baseless claims against the fraternity as a whole. |
