There are two parts that seem troublesome. They are:
NEW SECTION WAC 504-26-202 Acts of dishonesty. Acts of dishonesty, include but are not limited to the following: (1) Cheating, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty such as: (b) Facilitation of dishonesty, including not challenging academic dishonesty;
NEW SECTION WAC 504-26-219 Abuse of the student conduct system. Abuse of the student conduct system, including but not limited to:
(5) Attempting to discourage an individual's proper participation in, or use of, the student conduct system.
Academic dishonesty should be punished but this seems to indicate that if you see a person cheating or know they are you can get punished and classified as committing and act of academic dishonesty for not turning the person in! That can put people in awkward situations. It seems better to strongly encourage students to turn in cheaters but to require it might be going too far.
Stating that it is abuse of the student conduct system to attempt to discourage and individual’s proper participation in, or use of the, student conduct system is also going too far. It is perfectly reasonable to tell somebody that it might be beneficial to work out a situation between the parties involved than go to student conduct. Also it is perfectly reasonable to inform a student or his or her right not to participate if he or she does not want to.
It is reasonable to have a rule saying that it is abuse of the student conduct system to threaten an individual for participating in the student conduct process. This is clearly different then informing them of their rights and suggesting an alternative way of dealing with a situation.
Are you craming for a history class that covers the middle east? Check out this flash movie that shows 5,000 years of history in 90 seconds...and even if you are not taking history it is pretty cool. See it here.
A Seattle-PI (originating from the Spokesman Review) states that President Rawlins got a bonus this year bringing his pay to $514,450 + use of a car and a house. Regent Rafael Stone thinks that is about the same level of pay the new WSU president will be making. Seems some of WSU's faculty are not thrilled by this, from the article:
"One person doesn't make a university," said Charles Pezeshki, chairman
of the Faculty Senate at WSU, where in two years the average raise for
faculty has been 5 percent and 3 percent. "It's a bunch of us that make
a university. We've seen executive pay in the administrative cadre go
up and up and up, and faculty pay has languished."
WSU is a big place with multiple areas to administer, a huge budget, and of course over 20k students around the state. The president needs a 6 figure income...but a half mill a year? Here is the link to the article.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has a dvd that they are sending out to universities that is like one of those T.V. after school specials on drugs. Darn you kids stop downloading music! See the video here.
Well we have had some feedback/criticism on our posting WSU employees' pay and on the question if professors are over or underpaid. A WSU professor writes: "Hey (Cougster.com) team,
First, your salary information does not include all wsu employees (far from it).. You claim you do; false advertising! Don't be so sloppy, please.
Second, how would we know whether they are overpaid or underpaid? To do so, you would have to post information that compares across similar institutions ('peer institutions'). We rank second from bottom... Meaning that WSU seriously stands to lose some of its best professors. We could turn this in to a nice community college, if we want to...
I applaud what you are doing. But get educated, dudes, don't propagate erroneous information and numbers devoid of context. Remember, we are ALL cougs!"
Well we did mention 3 posts below this one that we did not have every WSU employee listed but we do have most (4800+) and hopefully all soon. One could make a judgment that a person is underpaid/overpaid even if they are getting the standard market rate for their position (you might not agree with the market's valuation). We do agree looking at other institutions would be beneficial. If some of our readers want to provide this information and elaborate on WSU pay relative to other universities/organizations we encourage you to post in the forums and you can also email us at
